Branching Out

Literally and figuratively. My main focus will remain information geared for those who are looking for information on herbs and somewhat herbal remedies.  I think it’ll be fun to grow my own herbs.  I may branch out to more than herbs.  However, I will most definitely take the time to include information of plants I plant as well as plants I have considered planting. Most of my planting will be priority driven.  This means what benefits my daily routines (facial care) will be my planting priority.  Everything else will probably fall in line with what I eat.  I like to eat and cooking is a necessity.   The fresher the herbs and vegetables, the better the dish.  So I’m going to give it a try!

Clear Skin From the Inside Out

You can have the clearest skin in the world…until you eat the wrong food or start slacking in your facial cleansing routine.  It happens to everyone.  If I get really stressed out, I get a surprise on my face.  Eat too many oranges, I get a surprise on my forehead.  Over the last few weeks, I’ve been really busy, and at times I have been too tired to wash my face before bed.  I don’t wear makeup on a regular basis, but I always moisturize my face.  I get tired of having to do a deep cleanse every other night before bed.  I workout alot and I sweat alot, but I don’t wear makeup.  Not wearing makeup helps, but you can’t forget the grime your face collects throughout the day.  Your pores need that layer of grime removed so you don’t wind up with Pimple Delight.  So I have been trying a few things to kind of keep my skin balanced. ACV Tea Rinse vs Cold Water Rinse

The featured image is the water rinse results 3 days later vs the ACV tea rinse results also 3 days later. This is the 3 month battle for shiny hair I’ve been immersed in.  I stumbled upon an alternative for the cold water rinse about a month ago.  I had tons of herbal tea rinses and plenty of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV).  On top of that, walking out the house with wet hair is no big deal right now.  So I decided to try something new.  I have super curly thick hair, so I deep condition year round at least twice a week.  I also live in a humid area so frizz all year long is an issue.  I know most people at this point probably know about the popular Cold Water Rinse for shiny hair.  If you haven’t, it’s essentially making your final rinse with cold water before styling your hair.  The cold water apparently shocks the hair cuticle into closing or laying down so that light reflects better off your hair.  It’s a method that is supposed to be good for all kinds of hair textures (curly, straight, etc).  So I tried the cold water rinse for 2 months […]

Summer Time: Chlorine & Sea Salt Hair Issues

Summer time is great!  Everybody is traveling and doing outdoor activities.  Swimming, long days in the sun, and tons of sun screen.  Oh and let’s not forget crispy hair.  So a lot of people tend to go for a lighter hair color in the summer, but ruin it after a few days at the beach or in a chlorine filled swimming pool.  Of course if you have children you’re fighting tangled rough hair.  So here are some remedies you can do on the go or at home to help your hair. Remedy #1: Strip your hair. I strongly advise herbal tea rinses mixed with a bit of vinegar to strip your hair of chlorine.  Brew a cup of herbal tea. Suggested Herbs: Calendula and Chamomile for Light Hair Rosemary and Nutmeg for Medium Hair Rosehip or Rose and Hibiscus for Shades of Red Sage and Nettle for Dark Hair Allow it to cool.  If you have dark hair, add 1/4 of a cup of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV).  If you have light hair, add 1/4 of a cup of White Vinegar (ACV).  If your current hair color falls in the middle, I would advise ACV.  Once the vinegar of your […]

So You Want to Henna

Your hair can benefit from henna, but the type of henna you use can be good or bad for your hair.  First of all, henna is only composed of the plant called Lawsonia inermis.  If your henna has more in it than that plant, use it at your own risk.  Henna has become so commercialized that, like tofu, you need to question the quality and source.  If the instructions on the package have special requirements for mixing it, like don’t use metal, use it at your own risk.  Henna is an herb.  Like most herbs, it’s best to use glass when using them to make anything because glass does not absorb the properties.  However, using metal to mix them won’t hurt.  Unless you are dealing with fresh onion. Hair Growth Remedies That Work

Ok, so it’s summer time, and most people see more growth during the summer.  Why?  Because everybody is out and doing something that has their blood circulation up.  Blood circulation is essential for hair growth because it carries all the nutrients throughout your body.  So how can we maximize and utilize this extra boost to help our hair growth? By using natural remedies to kick start hair growth.  Keep in mind everyone’s hair grows at a different rate, but the remedies listed below can help your scalp squeeze out healthier stronger hair faster.  Or depending on the person a wee bit faster. Remedy #1: Emu Oil If you go to the ingredients page you’ll find the nutritional rundown of Emu Oil listed.  We don’t use Emu Oil in our products, but Emu Oil is very good for your scalp.  If you don’t have a problem with using animal by products, this oil may be an option for you.  Just apply it to your scalp once a day before you sleep and massage it into your scalp.  My advice is to was your hair every 7 days when using this method to avoid the risk of build up. Scrub Away!

Everybody needs a little exfoliation, and the best time to do it is during the winter.  Why?  Because 9/10 of the time we are completely covered, unless you’re lucky enough to live in a warm area year-round.  So after removing any dead skin, we can moisturize and protect our skin and keep it soft and supple.  I think winter is the best for exfoliation because people tend to use thicker lotions and creams to combat dry skin caused by winter weather.  Well there’s a problem with that.  These heavier lotions and creams can’t penetrate our skin as well as they should.  So sometimes patches of hard dry skin appear in areas we take care of really well.  By using exfoliation, we open our pores and remove dry skin that has built up so our creams and lotions can actually do their jobs.  With that said, let’s talk about scrubs.  Bath scrubs not Scrubs. The Run Down: Minerals and Vitamins

          I decided to do a rundown of on the vitamins and minerals that can be found in our products.  Though we hear that certain herbs are great for this and that, rarely do we hear the why.  What makes one combination herbs better than another combination?  Well it’s the vitamin and mineral content within a specific combination of herbs.  If the combination of herbs isn’t right then they can cancel out properties of “weaker” herbs.  The same concept applies for vitamins and minerals ingested or topically applied.  Too much of a good thing either gets thrown off, canceled out by something else, or wreaks havoc on your system.  We work to make sure our products are balanced and healthy.  Here’s the why behind some of our ingredient choices: I.  Iron: It carries oxygen to the scalp and promotes growth by helping with blood circulation.  Blood circulation is essential for carrying nutrients to every part of your body. Natural Ways to Get Rid of Field Mice

  Ok, so I’m a country girl, and I love horses.  However, I don’t love field mice.  Field mice are not those gigantic alien looking huge rats you find in the city.  Field mice are usually the size of a pet mouse or a little fatter.  They eat everything from books (yes I’ve lost a few good books to them) to left-over food in the sink.  They are pesky little things that seem to come out of nowhere.  So here are some things to avoid when dealing with field mice. Food and good smelling stuff…safeguard it!  They’re sense of smell is really strong.  We have a lot of tea and other good smelling edibles in cardboard boxes.  Keeping food or perishable items in cardboard boxes is fine during the summer, but not so fine with cold whether coming.  So we transfer every item into plastic/glass tubs or containers.  Mice can’t eat through plastic or glass.  Also, a perk to this is that the smell of edibles is masked. Rose Facial Mask for Skin Tightening and Lip Balm for Moisture & Protection

There is a previous post on the benefits of rose in regards to the hair and scalp.  However, there are other uses for rose.  From homemade lip balms to skin tightening creams some rose and other ingredients can be used.  Here are a few things you can make with a little bit of rose.   Rose Lip Balm:                 2 teaspoons of grated pure beeswax                 4 teaspoons of almond oil                 1 teaspoon of rose water Take rose petals and steep in hot water for 30 minutes.  While waiting for the rose petals to steep, place a glass jar with beeswax in it in a pot with water at the half way point of the jar, and slowly bring the water to a boil. Stir until the beeswax is completely liquefied then add the almond oil.  Mix until both oils are inseparable.  Once well mixed, lower the fire under the pot to keep the mix warm and liquefied.   Strain the rose petals from the fresh rose water.  Stir the rose water into the glass jar containing the beeswax and almond oil mix.  Once mixed, pour the lip balm into the final container you would like it to be in.  […]
